Ken and Anna Kunken (formerly Blazejczyk) assisted Ken’s colleague at the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Dan Looney, in developing a design for the 9/11 Memorial.
The first version of their design was developed during the spring of 2002. At the May 23 2002 public hearing sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, their design was one of the first ever presented for a 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Their presentation attracted media attention, including The Sunday New York Times (05.26.2002) and The Gottham Gazette. On July 19, 2002 they were interviewed for the evening news on Channel 55 (WLNY). The second version of their design was one of the top three finalists for the Nassau County 9/11 Memorial Design Competition. It was the subject of a Newsday article on May 06, 2003 and The Farmingdale Observer on May 16, 2003. The third version of their design was submitted for the New Jersey 9-11-01 Memorial Design Competition.
